Frequently Asked Questions
Here are some questions I’m often asked about the Discovering the Bible series.
Where are the resources and links mentioned in the books?
The resources and links are in downloadable bonus bundles that you can get to from here: https://www.jeanejones.net/resources/
Are there teaching videos to go with the lessons?
Yes! We provide teaching videos for groups that like to show videos at their meetings and for those who desire to learn a little more on the topics covered in the lessons.
Are these Bible studies good for small groups?
Yes! The Discovering the Bible series of books is great for small groups. Each chapter has two devotionals to encourage newer believers and plenty of sidebars with extra details for seasoned believers wanting more. The study itself is filled with practical application questions that will spur conversation. Suggestions for creative meditation on Scripture abound, engaging women with different learning styles. We’ve timed the lessons to make sure busy readers can complete them in 20-25 minutes, and we offer options for those who have extra time. Additionally, every book comes with a free leader guide.
Are these Bible studies good for personal devotions?
Yes! The Discovering the Bible series is fabulous for personal devotions. Readers can learn at their own pace and choose from many optional activities. Jean E. Jones provides videos where readers can interact with her and other readers. Additionally, each book has a Facebook group where readers can ask questions, post pictures and videos of creative projects, and share what they’re learning. The books’ authors check in frequently.
How long do the lessons take?
Each chapter has five daily lessons that can be completed in 20 to 25 minutes. This makes it easy for small groups to go through a chapter in one week, though many churches prefer covering each chapter in two weeks. Lessons contain optional suggestions for diving into the material more deeply, including Scripture art. For example, coloring Karla Dornacher’s Scripture art while saying the verse provides an easy way to memorize key passages.
Which Bible studies are best for newer believers?
These three books are best for newer believers because they reinforce the gospel message:
- Discovering Good News in John
- Discovering Joy in Philippians
- Discovering Hope in the Psalms
Those new to Bible study can focus on the main lessons and devotionals in each chapter while skipping the sidebars, which are designed for seasoned believers.
Will seasoned believers find these Bible studies too basic?
No. The lessons have plenty of historical and theological information that will keep seasoned believers learning. In addition, the many sidebars entitled “The Little Details” are provided for those already familiar with the Bible.
